“In most American churches today, what they call discipleship is really nothing more than an attempt to teach goats how to live like sheep.
Here is the key to discipleship: “my sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me” (John 10:27). Nowhere does it teach in the New Testament that we are to chase after “Christians” in an attempt to disciple them. The sheep follow; the goats do not. The only evidence of conversion is sanctification (fruit).”
–Paul Washer
The spiritual life of a believer is often defined as a journey towards Christlikeness (becoming like Jesus Christ). Discipleship is the deliberate process a more mature believer leads a new believer through to help him or her grow spiritually.
Discipleship Standards
- We know Christ as Lord and Savior (John 8:30).
- We have an assurance of our salvation (John 20:31).
- We have a thirst for God’s Word and grow spiritually (John 8:31).
- We communicate with God and know Him personally (Luke 11:1).
- We have been scripturally baptized and exhibit personal stewardship in a local church (Ephesians 4:11-12).
- We can transfer biblical truths of Christianity into everyday life (John 13:33-34).
- We have come to a point of forsaking all to follow Christ (Luke 14:33).
- We model life style behavior consistent with scriptural teaching (Romans 12:1-2).
- We are actively drawing non-believers to Christ (John 15:8).
- We are effectively reproducing disciple makers (John 15:16).
